Series Review: Grades 3-5 – The high/low books in the Air Power series (6 new titles) rely on concise, clear sentences and, most effectively, bold infographics to detail the developmental history of different types of military aircrafts. Each aircraft in these volumes is still in use today, and the text discusses how technological advances have led to updates and improvements. AH-1Z Viper discusses how this attack helicopter was born out of updates made to the Cobra helicopter from the Vietnam War. The books’ tone tends, at times, toward military glorification, though for the most part the focus is on the technological features of the aircrafts, while the concentration on their usage throughout their lifespans keeps the text from becoming dated too quickly. In addition to stock photos, each volume contains a time line of development, a labeled diagram, and a final “By the Numbers” spread of statistics. For visual learners, numbers fans, and technology nuts, this is a sharply designed pick.
