Series Review: Rather than admonishing children to “do the right thing” or offering a number of virtuous role models, books in the Making Good Choices series tell stories that let readers make decisions that lead to varied endings. Each path chosen leads to a different page number, but many readers will want to go back and explore the other options as well. Though the preferred choice may be obvious, the writing is even-handed in that each outcome reflects the logical consequences of choosing a particular course of action. You Can Be Helpful takes place the day after a storm. Charlotte and Evan can explore, play, and/or help clear tree branches from the road, enabling them to attend a picnic later. In You Can Be Polite, William is served pepperoni pizza in another family’s home. After blurting out that he hates pepperoni, can he salvage the evening using tact? You Can Persevere introduces Dahabo, who is working on her science-fair project. Frustrated that the seeds haven’t sprouted, she considers quitting, but her teacher makes suggestions. In You Can Use Money Wisely, Miles has earned $30 pet sitting and plans to buy a video game, but he’s tempted by a T-shirt, trading cards, and candy. Clearly illustrated with colorful, digital artwork, this series encourages children to consider possible outcomes before making decisions.
