Series Review: Filled with colorful photographs, the Spot Sports series is a great introduction to sports and a fun way for young readers to practice reading familiar words and learn new ones. Bowling shows readers a five-member bowling team, balls, and a bowler in action, in addition to revealing types of shoes bowlers need and what a foul looks like. In Cheerleading, readers watch spirited athletes performing stunts and get close-up views of cheerleading uniforms, a mascot, and pom-poms. Batters hit and pitchers throw in Softball, which introduces readers to the game and shows a home run taking place. In Track and Field, several events are depicted, including the shot put, the high jump, and relay races. On the first page of each title, readers are invited to look for certain words and pictures throughout the text. The large, color photographs show excellent detail and depict athletes in action, along or with their team, and provide closeups of equipment the athletes use in these sports. The large-font, clear text is easily distinguishable from the background image, and vocabulary words are set in front of an orange icon for easy identification. A fun and educational series for beginning readers interested in the world of sports.
