Book Review: Grades 1-3 – The Favorite Cat Breeds series (6 new titles) introduces early readers to a variety of cat breeds, presenting each group’s defining characteristics through a series of cute and colorful spreads. Each title highlights nine tidbits on the breed in question, touching on its distinguishing physical traits, personality, and behavior. Additionally—and necessarily—each entry includes a section on kittens, as well as the breed’s strengths as a pet. In Siberian Cats, readers meet Russia’s noble, long-haired national cat. “Like a Wild Cat?” insets compare the domesticated cats to their big, wild cousins, and back matter includes a visual guide to identifying the breed, plus a glossary and further reading. These being written to support early readers, details are lacking, but that’s part of the charm, with the design, layout, and information all befitting an easygoing experience, meant for browsing by young cat lovers or those considering a pet of their own. For those untroubled by the ethics of animal breeding—here not addressed—this makes for a cozy choice, with cat pics aplenty.
