Tri State Young Adult Book Review Committee

Critical Annotation: Against the blue background on every page are bright images of the oceanic whitetip shark and text which tells the reader all about whitetip biology, migration and ecology of this shark. The vivid pictures will definitely attract the younger reader, and possibly scare some. The text is informative without being overwhelming for elementary age children. Sidebars in bold yellow frames highlight interesting factoids such as “Feeding frenzies” (page 13) and “Boat’s best friend” (page 17). The book concludes with a glossary, ‘to learn more’ (print and web) and an index.

Recommendations: Unlike some books on sharks, this little book isn’t horribly graphic, but just gruesome enough to pull in young readers, especially boys. The informative text would not overburden young readers, and the images are most enticing. Overall, a good purchase ….cut off
