Tri State Young Adult Book Review Committee, Mary Munforg Elementary
Critical Annotation: Elementary students who enjoy drawing will appreciate this new title on drawing monsters. Students are provided with easy step-by-step instructions to help young readers gain the confidence of drawing a monster. The author provides information on monsters and their existence in myths, legends, and folktales. Students get to be the judge of whether these creatures are fact or fiction. A short list of supplies are suggested for drawing that includes pencils, erasers, colored pencils, pencil sharpeners, and paper and a black ink pen. The author provides students with eight monsters to draw: Chupacabra, Frankenstein, goblin, mummy, Loch Ness monster, werewolf, zombie, and Bigfoot. Each monster includes a general explanation about its possible existence, along with tips for making the drawing better. Interesting sidebars scattered throughout will assist readers in shaping their piece of art.
Series Comments: Ten titles have been published as this review all focused on helping students draw monsters, robot, sharks, dinosaurs, horses, big cats, aliens, and others for aspiring illustrators. Young readers will gain artistic confidence and discover the satisfaction in following simple steps as they watch their drawings come to life! Recommendations: Would make a good addition to a library’s drawing collection. — Will never be on the shelf especially during Halloween. Step by step instruction on how to draw classic monsters and a little history into the legend of each one. Fun with vocabulary and definitely need to use as a display during the holiday because it would be great to use during classroom activities. Since it’s a how to, wouldn’t be a read aloud, but might make a great starting point during story telling. Two thumbs up!
