Critical Annotation:
With the able combination of Jon Eppard’s text and Steve Porter’s sketches, this book will appeal to more experienced young artists due to the complexity of the designs. Each two-page spread introduces a new dog, with a bit of background information about the dog, enumerated steps which take the artist from the beginning simple circle or oval to the final, more detailed picture, ending with how to use color to make the final product! The layout is designed in an attractive format, and each two-page spread provides an extra snippet of information designed to help the sketcher hone his kills. Note that a beginner may have trouble reproducing these sketches due to a limit on the number of steps provided. More text and extra visual aides may have remediated this. However, this volume is still noteworthy for its attempt to show how an artist works. The dogs included are: Pugs, Saint Bernards’ Beagles, Labs, Dalmations, Dobermans, German Shepherds, and Chihuahuas. Vocabulary is highlighted throughout the book, and the list of glossary words is included at the end along with websites and books that young readers can consult for information. A short index wraps up the volume. Series Comment: Includes books about aircraft, big cats, dogs, horses, manga and monsters. All volumes are clearly designed to facilitate young sketchers who hope to reproduce renditions of a variety of creatures and objects! Easy-to-comprehend text describes each drawing, and enumerated steps take the artist from start to finish. Recommendations: This series should be part of all elementary and middle school libraries. Public libraries might carry it also for it is a good one for artists of all ages.
