Critical Annotation: For students who wish to learn how to draw wild animals, this book offers pointers on how to start with basic geometric shapes and flesh in the strokes to create the finished concept. The best part of the book is the use of graph paper lines so students can recreate the pencil strokes in more precise length, proportion and direction. Less well done is the instruction on shading and detail features needed to create a realistic final result. Somehow, the final result depicted does not look like a pencil drawing – more like a watercolor. Starting each chapter is a paragraph of text that describes how one cat’s features are unique and different from other wild cats. A list of materials needed to create the drawings, tips to become a better artist, glossary, further reading and index complete the book.

Series Comments: You Can Draw It! is aimed at the intermediate artist in grades 6-8. Each book aircraft, cats, dogs, horses, manga, monsters provides a five step process starting with geometric shapes and ending with color in order to create a finished pencil drawing. Recommendations: Recommended for intermediate level artists who want to know how to draw wild animals, especially the big cats. Limited instruction beyond the basic body shape. — This book will never be on the shelf! Show in detail how to draw different big cats, but also teaches about each animal, where they live, how they act etc… Highlighted vocabulary words. I think that all the books in this series should be added to the collection. Great display book and a great book to expand the child’s love of art while learning about the species they are drawing.
