Critical Annotation This title in the History’s Greatest Warriors from the Torque imprint tells the story of the Spartan warriors. Using great illustrations and light text, this title first identifies who the Spartans were, then it tells about the training and weapons of the ancient Spartans. It introduces their tactics and two famous battles. This is a brief introduction to Greek history through the warriors of ancient Sparta. The illustrations of fierce fighting men will attract young boys. Several appear to be photographs of costumed actor. The battle illustrations, on the other hand, are obviously drawn and don’t command the same impact. The included glossary is simple and does explain highlighted words from the text. This is especially helpful for the terms that came from the Greek. The resources in the To Learn More page includes 3 books and only the publisher’s factsurfer web site. This is barely adequate. This title will attract young male readers but could also be helpful for middle school reluctant readers or students reading well below grade level. Series Comments The History’s Greatest warriors series from the Torque imprint includes 14 titles. Each title highlights a particular group of warriors, mostly from ancient history. Grades 3-7 Recommendations Recommended series for elementary schools and some middle schools for reluctant readers.
